No Pit Is So Deep and Dark That God’s Grace Can’t Reach You!
Corrie Ten Boon was a Dutch Christian Holocaust survivor who helped an estimated 800 Jews escape the Nazis during World War II. When I read her story as a young Christian, I could barely comprehend what she had experienced as a child. Even though she lived through horrors none of us can truly comprehend, she still believed that God was good. She said that there was “no pit so deep nor dark that God’s grace was not deeper and brighter still.”
I didn’t understand her words as a young Christian, but I sure do now. As a family, we had our own pit. Even though it was dark and deep, God equipped us with His strength, grace, love, and mercy. We didn’t ask for the trial we lived through. Have you ever asked God for tough times, hard tests, and difficult trials? I doubt it. We never have. God isn’t the one who sends these things. He is a good God. It’s Satan, who steals, kills, and destroys. Jesus brings life more abundant.
Why Do Bad Things Happen to Those That Love God?
So why do bad things happen? Because we live in a real world, with real circumstances, and not all of them are good. We live in a fallen world. We are not immune to thing things around us. Jesus said in the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 5, verse 45, “….for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” Life happens. There are things we faced because of the decision Adam and Eve made in the Garden. Their choice to disobey God brought the fall of all mankind, sin, sickness, curses, and strongholds in the world today. We live in this world, but we are not part of this world. That’s why Larry and I have always believed and shared one of our favorite verses, Romans 8:28, “All things work together for good to those that love God and are called according to His purposes.”
God Has Many Different Kinds of Miracles
Even though a lot of what I am going to share with you is about the miracles of healing Lion and I experienced. God’s supernatural power brings breakthroughs in every area of life including; family, children, finances, marriage, and your future. There isn’t a thing God can’t do. Nothing is impossible for Him! No matter what you are facing today, God’s presence and power is enough for any situation you are facing. Grab hold of that as you continue to hear more about the miracles by the moment we experienced.
Going Back to the Beginning of the Story – Unexpected News
Five years ago, our son Luke and his wife Jen, had their first baby. We were all so excited. We had waited for so long for them to have a child. Lion burst onto the scene with great joy. In fact, he was born on Simcha Torah, the day that God gave the Word to His people. Seven months into his life, he woke up one day in absolute agony. He couldn’t stop crying and had a high fever. They took him to the ER for tests. After several weeks of ruling different things out, Luke and Jen got unexpected news. He was diagnosed with leukemia.
Larry and I were there with them when they got the diagnosis. They quickly rushed Lion to the cancer floor at Cook’s Children. His treatments started immediately and included spinal taps, blood infusion and chemotherapy. He left his crib at home, and the amazing nursery behind, full of a jungle fit for the king of beasts, cute outfits, lamb blankets, and toys, for a hospital crib.
It Was All So Hard to Believe – We Had to Trust God Immediately!
We were all in shock. It was so hard to believe. We had to trust God immediately! For the next six months, 24/7 Lion would have treatments targeted at destroying the cancer in his body. His little fingers, feet and hands swelled up. His skin was raw and peeled off. It was heartbreaking. We were all so mad at Satan. I was in “she-bear” mode and fighting back with everything I had. Our whole family was. During our decades of ministry, we had seen the dead raised. This diagnosis didn’t fit our experience or our theology. We soon found out that sometimes we see one knockout punch or a miracle. Other times we see lots of smaller ones. We were about to see both as we experienced miracles by the moment.
Brilliant Light Shines Through the Darkness
As we fought back, we spoke only faith. We still had to walk things out day by day. Luke and Jen lived at the hospital taking care of Lion. Jen changed his diapers, wore a special suit to protect her from the toxins in his body, and she curled up in the crib with him while he slept. Luke slept in a chair by the crib. It was a dark and difficult time. It was difficult to find a bright spot. God reminded me of a story, Udi, a friend and artist in Israel had told me. He said when you have a brilliant painting you have to paint a dark background so that the light pops off the page. We were all going through a dark time, but God’s light was still brilliant in the middle of the circumstances. Lion is cancer free and just celebrated his fifth birthday. God is faithful. He is good.
Whoever Survives A Test Must Tell Others The Story
I started the book with a powerful quote from Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor, who lived in the camps for years. He became an incredible author, political activist, and Nobel Prize winner. He wrote, “Whoever survives a test, whatever it may be, must tell the story. It is their duty. It is their duty.” Larry and I knew that it was our duty to share our stories. Psalm 1:18-17 is a strong declaration. “I will live and not die, but I will live and proclaim what the Lord has done. Amen. “That’s why we asked God to help us write this book.
About a year ago, a lady came up to me. She told me that she watched our television program and mentioned said, “You showed us how to walk through difficulties. You taught us how to endure challenges and be more than conquerors.” That is what Larry and I want to do, and why we wrote this book. Just like us, you will have to walk through things day by day. God will meet you where you are and give you the strength to stand as He gives you miracles by the moment.
This Couldn’t Be Happening To Me – To Us!
As we walked through Lion’s treatments, little did we know that I would be hit with a cancer diagnosis. In May 2019, Larry and I were in Israel with a hundred or so people on a tour. We were having a great time. We dedicated two more ICU Mobile ambulances while we were there. We also attended a luncheon at B’nai Zion Hospital in Haifa. We had donated equipment for their ICU years before and helped build a 24/7 underground emergency facility. We were rejoicing over what God had done with the hospital’s director, Dr. Rofe. Suddenly, an ambulance pulls up. It was one we had donated. We took some pictures with the ambulance crew and their patient. As they took her inside, I felt a sharp, unexpected pain.
I Could See A Future Without Me In It
When I returned home, I went to the doctor. He ordered a CT scan and then referred me immediately to a gynecological oncologist. He came in and gave us the diagnosis. Larry, Katie, and I had no idea what was coming. It’s “ovarian cancer,” he said. “Very aggressive and advanced. Stage 4. We need to do surgery in three days.” It felt like the room was spinning. I couldn’t move. No one could. I could hear the doctor talking to us, but it was like a “death experience.” I saw my future passing before me. I saw Katie getting married but I wasn’t there. Anna, Brandon, Aviva and Asher and Judah were all growing up, but I wasn’t with them. Larry was coming to church, but I wasn’t with him. I was seeing all of this in my mind in a split second…a future without me in it. I snapped back into the present as The doctor said, “You’ll have the surgery and then chemotherapy.” I couldn’t hold my tears in any longer. The floodgates opened. Larry and Katie rushed over and surrounded me and we just huddled together. As we cried, I heard Larry say, “We’re going to do this. We’ll get through it. We’re believers. We’re pastors. We are all a family and we’ll face this together”.
God Would Add His Supernatural to Our Natural
We have a ministry that reaches the world. We help a lot of people all around the globe in Israel, Zimbabwe, Haiti, Brazil, and the Dominican Republic. Our individual and ministry destiny was at stake. It wasn’t just about me and the rest of the family, but it was also about you. We were praying for you. We were sharing God’s Word with you. We were believing for your miracle. We were going to have to do everything we could in the natural, but God would add His supernatural to our natural. Miracles were about to happen.
Every Day Was A Challenge – Each Day Had A Promise
I had surgery. They cut 18 inches from my body. I had a complete hysterectomy, and they removed a lot of other organs as well. Then I started my chemotherapy treatments which lasted six months. I lost my hair, eyebrows, and even my eyelashes. It was quite a challenge. When the pandemic came from 2020 to 2021, I had to go into isolation. Afterwards, I had immunotherapy sessions for two years to help me get stronger and prevent a recurrence. Instead of sitting on the front row at church, I sat at home and praised God and watched the service on “live stream.”
My Top Priority – 100 Healing Scriptures and the Promises Behind Them
During it all, my healing was the priority. Larry bought me a table with an umbrella and I’d sit outside every morning, read my bible and pray. Our friend Rafael Cruz, Senator Ted Cruz’s father sent me 100 healing scriptures (link to the scriptures) that he proclaimed daily. I didn’t miss a day. I declared them faithfully and believed God for each and every promise. I would live and not die and declare the glory of the Lord in the land of the living. I knew there was nothing too hard for God. I saturated my soul and my mind with His promises, power, and presence. I was believing for my miracle, but I was seeking the miracle worker. I was persuaded. I knew my God. We had things to fight – Lion’s cancer and mine. We were going to win. We were more than overcomers. We would be victorious and conquer this disease!
Cancer Had No Right To Defeat Us – We Were More Than Conquerors!
Daily we fought the good fight of faith. We denied cancer’s right to rule and reign in our lives and bodies. We were aggressive. We didn’t pull the cover over our eyes and stay in bed. Oh no! We faced cancer down. We believed our God was bigger, greater, and the One who had already given us the victory! We choose to trust Him no matter what we felt, saw, or heard. There were a few setbacks, but God never left the throne. He never let us down – not once.
God Was Watching Over His Word to Perform It For Us!
God watches over His Word to perform it. He did it for us and He’ll do it for you as you trust Him. That’s where our peace came from. That’s where our joy flowed from. That’s where the miracles came from moment by moment. If there is anything I can teach you it’s to stay close to God. Develop an intimate relationship with Him. Trust Him. He will never fail you. I don’t want you to have to go through it. God met us every step of the way and was more real to us than He had ever been throughout our many years of marriage, family life, and ministry. We daily choose to make Him our strength. Deuteronomy 33:26 says, “As your day is, so shall your strength be.”
Caught In a Tsunami Attack – But We Got Up to Fight Again
Larry and I have been caught in some massive storms. We’ve been through some El Ninos. I remember one time when the waves came in and out for 30 minutes. It was thrashing me so hard and fast that I couldn’t get my footing. I thought I’d never get back up. It was so scary. I actually thought I was going to die. It was then that Larry caught me and took me to shore. That’s how we felt when Satan attacked us with Lion’s cancer, and then mine. I had never felt fear like when I heard Lion’s diagnosis, and months later mine. I didn’t want to die. I wanted to enjoy my life, family, and the ministry. There were times when I thought I couldn’t get my footing. But I did and we got up to fight another day. Each day we got closer to victory. And God gave us miracles by the moment to encourage us. We just kept taking our faith to the next level. That’s what you have to do.
Take Your Faith to the Next Level – Defeat the Odds
We dug in, took our faith to the next level and defeated the odds. Lion did. I did. This is how we always fought our battles. This was how we would continue to fight. We never sat down, felt sorry for ourselves and let Satan run over us. Oh yeah, there were times when we cried. There were also days we laughed and were filled with joy. We knew God had this! The end of the story was cancer free!
That was the case when a CT scan during the summer showed a small spot, a 1.5 centimeter size area. The doctors removed it and I’m cancer free once more. This week I began a series of chemotherapy treatments that will keep me that way. Why? Because God’s got this. We’ve been in the trenches for years now, but God’s got this! He hasn’t changed. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever! His Word hasn’t changed. He is still faithful to His promises. I believe the side effects this time are going to be less this time because God is greater than anything we can face, now or ever!
Nothing – Not One Thing Is Impossible for Our God!
For each one of us, the circumstances of life can sometimes make it seem as if the walls are closing in around us. We can feel overwhelmed by responsibilities, financial pressures, negative health reports, tumultuous events going on in the world, or even within our own families. The whirlwind of emotions, shock, pain, and fears can take us into a downward spiral of hopelessness, loneliness, and despair. At times, we feel like we’re carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders all by ourselves, with no one to help us. We want to tell you right now that you are not alone.
Remember, no matter what you are facing, God will meet you where you are. You are more than a conqueror. Dig in your feet and stay determined to go through the valley, to the top of the mountain, and take your victory. Although the valley is not fun, it is the place where you can grow fruit. Greater is He that’s in you than anything that can come against you. Nothing is impossible for our God.
