A Beacon of Hope: The Cohen Family’s Story of Resilience

In times of unimaginable trauma, stories like the Cohen family’s remind us of the strength of the human spirit and the profound impact of compassion. Their journey highlights the hardships faced by families in Israel and the healing power of initiatives like the Fund for Victims of Terrorism, supported by Keren Hayesod. This story is not only about enduring hardship but about finding hope and healing through community and faith.

Five years ago, during Sukkot 2019, Revital and Eli Cohen of Beersheba embarked on what was meant to be a joyful family outing to Jerusalem with their three youngest children—Talia, 6; Hodaya, 4; and Yagel, 1.5. Their first stop was the Western Wall, a sacred site for reflection and prayer. Tragically, a wrong turn led them into the neighboring village of Silwan, where they found themselves surrounded by an angry crowd. The mob pelted their car with rocks, shattering windows and damaging the vehicle. Though they miraculously escaped without physical injuries, the psychological wounds ran deep.

The trauma was especially severe for Hodaya and little Yagel. Hodaya developed acute anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), while Yagel struggled with lasting fear. The Cohen family’s lives were forever changed. As they sought to navigate their new reality, they were met with unwavering support from the Jewish Agency’s Fund for Victims of Terrorism. This organization, with the help of generous donors, provided the Cohens with therapeutic resources, including a transformative opportunity for Hodaya: participation in a specialized summer camp.

Healing Through Camps and Community

Hodaya’s first camp experience marked a turning point. Initially too afraid to leave home, she found the courage to attend with the help of her older sister, Shoham, who provided comfort and stability. Recognizing Shoham’s empathy and leadership, camp organizers invited her to join as a counselor. Together, the sisters embraced this safe space, surrounded by peers and mentors who understood their struggles.

Over the years, the camp became a sanctuary for the Cohens. Hodaya returned each summer, gradually rediscovering the joys of childhood. Two years ago, her younger brother Yagel joined her, finding solace and camaraderie among other children who shared similar experiences. These camps, designed to address the emotional needs of young victims of terror, offer therapeutic activities, arts, crafts, and group support that help children process their trauma and regain their confidence.

The resilience of the Cohen family has been tested time and again. Following the horrific attacks of October 7, 2023, Eli Cohen was called up for reserve duty, leaving Revital to manage their household amidst the ongoing challenges of war and uncertainty. Despite these hardships, the family remains deeply grateful for the support they’ve received from the Fund for Victims of Terrorism and its committed partners.

A Heartfelt Gift of Gratitude

One particularly touching moment in their journey was Hodaya’s gesture of appreciation to Pastor Larry, a dedicated supporter of the Fund. Through her art, Hodaya expressed her heartfelt thanks by creating a beautiful drawing that was later framed and presented to Pastor Larry in a moving ceremony. The video of this presentation captures the depth of gratitude and serves as a powerful testament to the healing and hope that the Fund brings to families like the Cohens and highlights the repair between Jews and Christians!

Pastor Larry’s unwavering commitment has provided critical emotional and financial support to countless families. His partnership with the Fund ensures that children like Hodaya and Yagel receive the care and opportunities they need to heal and thrive. The framed drawing now stands as a symbol of resilience, faith, and the transformative power of compassion.

Join Us in Making a Difference

The Cohen family’s story underscores the importance of supporting initiatives that bring light to the darkest of times. These camps are not just recreational—they are lifelines for children coping with trauma, providing them with the tools and community they need to rebuild their lives.

We invite you to watch the video of Hodaya presenting her framed drawing to Pastor Larry. Witness the profound impact of your generosity and the joy it brings to children who have endured so much. Your continued support can help ensure that more families like the Cohens receive the assistance they desperately need.

Together, we can be a source of hope and healing for the youngest victims of terror. Let’s stand united in our mission to bring light, love, and restoration to these innocent lives as we Tikkun Olam… Repair A Broken World.
